Gout is a rheumatological inflammatory disease caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia) and the accumulation of its crystals in the body. This most often occurs due to a long-term high intake of purines into the body, increased production of uric acid or its insufficient excretion.

The disease can be hereditary (it is reported that up to 60 % patients also have a relative suffering from gout) or caused unhealthy lifestyle. Risk factors that can cause this disease include:

• excessive consumption of foods rich in protein,
• excessive alcohol consumption,
• insufficient drinking regimen,
• lack of exercise,
• long-term use of certain medications, such as diuretics (to remove fluid from the body),
• therapy of malignant diseases (chemotherapy and radiation treatment),
• renal insufficiency.
