Description
Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men, after colorectal cancer and lung cancer. Without a special test, the disease is difficult to detect.
I recommend taking care of your health and going to your urologist for a preventive check-up once a year and having an ultrasound, a blood test – prostate antigen, so-called PSA, and discussing everything with your doctor. I know from my own experience that many clients are afraid to go to the doctor and say “it’s better not to know”, but I still recommend that they take care of their health and go for prevention.
Around the age of 50 and later, it is common for the prostate to enlarge. This phenomenon is technically called benign prostatic hyperplasia, you may also encounter the abbreviation BHP. However, it can appear earlier, even from the age of 40. Half of men over the age of 60 suffer from an enlarged prostate, and even 90% over the age of 70. Of course, problems worsen with age. However, there is no direct correlation between the size of the prostate and the problems it causes. So even a less enlarged prostate can cause more problems than a significantly enlarged one.
An enlarged prostate presses on the urethra, causing:
- delayed start of urination,
- narrowing of the urine stream,
- the need to exert more effort when urinating,
- more frequent and intermittent urination,
- feeling of incomplete emptying,
- urine leakage,
- nocturia (more frequent need to urinate during sleep).
If neglected, it can lead to repeated urinary tract infections and urine retention in the bladder and kidneys. The result can even be kidney failure.
Men who have increased testosterone production, suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes (sometimes called fatty liver disease), or have too much sugar or unhealthy fats in their diet and are overweight or obese are at greater risk of this health problem.
