Cellular immunity is one of the two main types of immune system in the body (the second is humoral immunity). Cellular immunity specializes in defending the body against infections and cancer using various types of immune cells. These cells are able to recognize and destroy pathogenic microorganisms, infected cells, and abnormalities such as tumors. Some of the main components of cellular immunity include:

 

  1. T-lymphocytes (T-cells): T-lymphocytes are one of the main types of cellular immunity. There are different subtypes of T-lymphocytes, including helper T-cells (CD4+), cytotoxic T-cells (CD8+), and regulatory T-cells. T-lymphocytes play a key role in recognizing and destroying infected cells or tumor cells.
  2. Macrophages: Macrophages are phagocytic cells, meaning they are capable of engulfing and digesting foreign particles and pathogens. Macrophages play an important role in the immune system by "surveilling" the body's environment for the presence of pathogenic microorganisms and mediating the immune response.
  3. NK cells (natural killer cells): NK cells are specialized lymphocytes that target tumor cells and cells infected with viruses. They are able to recognize abnormal cells and destroy them.

In this way, cellular immunity helps control infections and prevents the growth of tumor cells.

 

Together with humoral immunity, which includes the production of antibodies, cellular immunity forms an essential component of the overall immune system that protects the body from various diseases and infections.

 

 

  1. Antibody production: B-lymphocytes are immune cells that play a key role in humoral immunity. Upon contact with a pathogen (such as a bacterium or virus), B-lymphocytes differentiate into plasma cells that produce antibodies specific for that pathogen. These antibodies are able to recognize and bind to antigens (foreign substances) on the surface of the pathogen.
  2. Neutralization of pathogens: Antibodies are able to bind to pathogens and block their ability to enter the body's cells. This can prevent infection.
  3. Activation of the complement system: Antibodies can activate the complement system, a group of proteins in the blood plasma that helps destroy pathogens. Complement activation can cause cell damage or the breakdown of pathogens.
  4. Opsonization: Antibodies can opsonize (label) pathogens for phagocytes such as macrophages and neutrophils. This increases the ability of phagocytes to engulf and destroy pathogens.
