Serrapeptase in context

SERRAPEPTASE has been used in Europe and Asia for over 25 years. It has long been a subject of professional interest in the context of various body systems - especially circulatory, musculoskeletal and respiratory - and processes related to the body's adaptation to stress and its long-term functionality. Attention is paid to it in connection with conditions related to the heart and blood vessels, injuries and sports stress, and various types of inflammatory processes. Serrapeptase also has its place in traditional medicine and alternative approaches, where it is used for a variety of purposes.

Serrapeptase, also known as serralysin or serratiapeptase, is a proteolytic enzyme naturally occurring, for example, in silkworms.

Enzymatic activity and potency

The key parameter is enzymatic activity, not the weight of the enzyme itself. The effectiveness is expressed in SPU units (Serratiopeptidase Units) - the higher the SPU value, the higher the enzyme activity. The designation SERRAPEPTASE 500,000 SPU therefore informs about the biological activity, not about the weight of the substance.

Some manufacturers only list the amount in milligrams on the label, but this only indicates the weight of the substance contained, not its actual enzyme strength.

It is also important to check whether the declared activity (e.g. 500,000 SPU) is per capsule or divided into several daily doses. If the value is calculated over two or three capsules, each capsule contains only a portion of the stated activity.

The capsules are enteric-coated – they have a special coating that is resistant to the acidic environment of the stomach. They dissolve only in the more alkaline environment of the small intestine, where their contents are released. This protects the enzyme from the effects of stomach acid and releases it only where it is needed.
